New Bu!

Hi everyone,

I picked up a 2002 Sunscape 21 LSV several weeks ago, and am absolutely in love with it! It has several issues (that I knew about when I bought it), and needs some TLC, however the engine only had 43 hours on it when I bought it!

I’ve got a huge list of things that need to be done, and another huge list of things that I want to do, including a tower and a sweet audio system. I will do some searching and post questions as they come up. For now I just wanted to say hi, and that this site and the people on it seem to be awesome!

Welcome, yup you will find good advice on just about anything here.

43 hours and has several issues... Are you sure it's a Bu? Can't imagine the boat had them to start with nor can I imagine anyone causeing issues in 43 hours. Was it in some sort of accident?

First words of advice, get a spare sea water pump impeller and carry it and the few needed tools in the boat. You can find advice and where to buy at a decent price in the maintenance section. Good insurance for around $35.

Glad you are here.

Where are you located?

Do you mainly ski, board, surf, all?

What kind of work needs to be done on the boat?

Good questions!

I updated my profile, I am from western Ma, Amherst specifically.

I mainly ski, however I’ve got a bunch of friends that are into boarding, so we do that a bit too (but mostly ski!) We also spend a lot of time just hanging out on the boat. I tend to load it up pretty hefty.... I’ve got a picture kicking around with 20 of us all loaded into it for a [slow] booze cruise. Someday I'll post that. The V-drive configuration is awesome for doing that!

Stuff that needs to be done:

- New analog speedo (the digital MDC and analog tach work fine)

- new steering cable! It is a workout to turn the wheel, and requires 2 hands at all times. I have a feeling some water sat in the bilge for quite a while...the cover was ripped when I bought it.

- replace cover

- replace blower (it sounds funny)

- replace bilge pump with a new one (it sometimes doesn’t work). Does anyone know if a 2002 sunscape came with an automatic bilge pump? This one does not work automatically...

- fix passenger/observer seat (the white plastic on the underneath side is fractured. I have re-enforced it with wood for a quick fix).

- the teak wood on the platform needs some major TLC. It is very gray.

- the fiberglass needs some major TLC. All around boat below the rub rail the gel coat is lightly scratched. Maybe caused by a mooring or docking?? The gel coat in the stern above the platform needs some help. Several scratches, and some MAJOR sun fade. Looks pink. This is all something that can be fixed with a good rotary polisher and some TLC.

- check out the throttle position sensor. There is a hesitation consistently at 1500 rpm, but only when slowly accelerating. I think that the TPS would be a good place to start.

Stuff I want to do:

- put a tower up (with all the toys: ski/board racks, lights, speakers)

- install a sub and amps to power tower, sub, and maybe cabin? Probably an additional battery with a switch too.

- install some pull out cleats (there are none on the boat now)

- get some sort of graphics for the middle of each side of the hull. It looks pretty plain now, all it says is Malibu at the very rear of each side. I’ve got no idea what I want to do with this yet.

- install some speakers in the bow (or maybe some front facing speakers on the tower?)

- install some sort of red (to match the boat) LED, rope light, or halogen (saw the DIY PVC post a while back) light under the swim platform, and possibly some more around the cabin.

- Stainless cup holders look awesome! I might have get some of them too.

And that’s just the beginning!...

I will post on each topic as we work on them this winter

- Chad

Makes you cry to see a sweet boat treated like that.

Its hard to imagine your teak could be worse than mine was. See http://www.wakesiderides.com/rides/index.p...=out&id=524

Someone tried to stain it once and it was warped. A lot of belt sanding, wet sanding, and oiling and yours can look like new too. I couldn't believe the difference the refinished teak made to the look of the boat.

Have you decided which tower you want to go with?

Yes, it is real hard to see a boat treated like this one was. The sale of this boat was a product of a divorce. Couple bought the boat, used it for a year and part of another one, then got divorced and it sat for a while. It was stored inside at a marina (I talked with them extensively about it) over the winter, but basically sat out side since April. There was a massive 4’ rip in the canvas too, so it filled right up with leaves and water and gunk. The wife had possession of it and obviously didn’t care much for it. She must have been in way over her head on a loan, because they were asking a crazy amount for it. Knowing it had been sitting for quite a while, and with little interest since it was so filthy, I offered her a little more than half of what she was asking, and got laughed off the property. A day later she called and said we had a deal.

A solid day of cleaning with three buddies, and it looked sharp. Changed all the fluids and replaceable parts including the impellor. Removed the stereo from our old boat and put it in this one, and we were good to go.

GONORTH: you’re right; there was a fair amount of stuff that was wrong with it for a bu with such low hours. However each thing was minor, most were cosmetic, and almost all were a product of neglect.

That is one UGLY platform! Looks great now! Mine is not that bad, just pretty gray. What product / teak oil did you use once you sanded it down?

I have not decided on a tower yet. I’m not sure how much I like the tube style towers, but they are growing on me. I really like the look of the illusion tower….. But that will be another discussion topic in the near future

There are a number of ways to address the platform. One way is to belt sand and stain. Another is to use a product called Teak Guard with or without belt sanding. There are a number of discussions about this on this site.

If the teak isn't damaged but just gray you probably don't need to sand it. Use a Teak Cleaner and then an oil and it will look great. My platform looks pretty gray by the end of every season because it sits in the water all season. After I clean it up in the spring it looks great.

Something like this will work:

Do you have Perfect Pass on that boat?

No, no perfect pass or any other type of speed control. Might be something I'd consider later, however we do not have a course at our lake, so im not sure if it would be worth it.

Trust me, it would be worth it. It doesn't matter what you are doing - skiing, boarding, or tubing for that matter, the PP makes a huge difference. You can get a more consistent pull as the person behind the boat, and as the driver you can pay more attention to where you are going and to your rider and less to micromanaging the throttle. Easily the first mod I would recommend.

Interesting. I'll have to look into it more
