Changed fluids today. Getting an accurate amount of fluid

Changed the V-drive and transmission fluids. Do I need to start the engine and engage the transmission to get an accurate reading?

Boat transmissions, unlike car/truck automatic transmissions, should not be running while the fluid level is checked.

Interesting link.  I just assumed you would thread the dipstick back in.

Just pumped my old oil into a big funnel with capacity markings on it and just added back the same amount I removed.  It was above the full mark both before I drained it and after.  I didn't worry about it since I refilled to the same mark the factory did.  Will have to check the way the link suggested.  Based on the length of the threads I would guess I will be right in between the marks now.

I was wondering if I might have pulled some fluid out of the transmission cooler. After you change the oil on a vehicle you start the engine to fill the oil filter and recheck the fluid level. I was thinking the same for the transmission cooler.

If you fill the transmission from the same place you pumped the fluid out that is not necessary.  In theory you just add the same amount that you pumped out.  I pump my transmission fluid into a large clear funnel with measurement marks.  That way I know exactly what I pumped out and hence exactly what I am going to add back.

The reason you do that for the engine oil filter is because the filter won't fill by adding oil to the pan (even though it is technically going through the valve cover).  Under the same principal you can't get oil out of the filter by pumping from the pan or dip stick tube other then what would have naturally ran out of the filter to the pan based on the angle that the filter connects to the engine.  If you don't change the filter the old oil stays in it and you would not have to start the engine to get an accurate reading.
