First time surf on the cheap

My son was able to surf for the first time this weekend. We only used the wedge with about 4 to 8 on board at various times, half a tank of gas. I have an 01 SS VLX with diamond hull, wedge and tower. I picked up a liquid shredder ocean surf board with no fins for 3 bucks at a yard sale. Its roughly 5 feet in length. We setup a rope and had him out and surfing with the rope. It took a few tries to find the sweet spot. Its  pretty close to the boat. Once we found it, he was able to go slack some. He even dropped the rope and rode for about 10 seconds before he slipped too far back. I have not tried it yet but want to. My daughter for some reason could not catch the hang of getting up on it yet even though she can get up easy on wakeboard and slalom. All in all, we had a blast! What tips can y'all provide for us? I had wanted to buy a board and a wake shape device for the boat but money is to tight right now for much. Id have to look for the one item best bang for the buck in addition to a proper rope to use.
