Tower Speaker Cut Out - Troubleshooting Help Needed

DAI

Recommended Posts

I have a pair of Wetsounds Alpha II 6x9 tower speakers and one of them cut out yesterday.  The only sound coming out of it is a faint high pitch noise.  I checked all the wires on the amps they they are all in.  The other speaker works perfectly fine.   Any thoughts on where to begin troubleshooting?  Is this a blown speaker?

Thanks!

The simply way to troubleshoot is just to swap things around, either the speaker wire connections at the amps, or the speakers themselves.  See if the problem follows the speaker or the amp.

Just to be clear, you have the 6x9 Horn Loaded Compression Driver in the Malibu Alpha II pods? Those drivers I believe have a tweeter self protection circuit. Amp tuning or a clipping source signal can trigger the protection. Lowering the volume will return the speaker to operation. Beyond that, it can be a tower wiring, amp or input signal issue.

@MadMan Thanks for the suggestion, i'll give it a try tomorrow.

@MLA Yes, I pretty certain that is correct.  I did drop the volume all the way down on the tower speakers, and had the boat completely off at one point with no change.  I never tuned the amp.  What do yo mean by 'clipping source signal'?  Thanks.
