1996 V-Drive overheat at idle

Hey everyone! I am new to this page and am excited to see if anyone can help me with an on going problem I have.  For several years now my boat has over heated at idle. It mainly only does it once a day. When I put it in the water and about 100 yards past the no wake zone it will get hot quick. Once I plain out it cools down just as quick and typically won't have the problem the rest of the day. Sometimes it will do it after an extended period of time at idle. Tried to tow someone the other day and had to stop due to the issue.

I just had the 500 hr service done on it which i do every other year regardless of hours. I have a new impeller installed every year. I have tightened all the hoses down as tight as I can to prevent air getting in the system. Also checked the trans cooler. 

Does anybody have any suggestions?

Have you checked the thermostat?

I put a new one in two years ago thinking that was the problem and it didn’t change anything

first splash for the day run the engine rpm up to 1500-ish for 10 seconds to prime the pump
