HELP Leaking ZF HSW450D tranny

Recommended Posts

I have a ZF/Hurth HSW 450 D transmission that seems to have a slow leak close to where it joins to the engine.   I have a couple of questions:

1) does anyone have a write up on how to remove the transmission?

2) I’m looking for a good source for parts/ rebuild kit (I usually use skidim, but they really don’t have anything for that tranny)

3) does anyone have a source for a parts breakdown/ schematic of this transmission ?

pulling the trans isn't too large of a job in that rig.

consider pivoting the whole engine + trans around the front motor mount.

you really don't have to move that assembly very far to gain the clearance you need.

take a peek at this link.

if working alone figure it's a 4 hour job.

Best ZF parts source is marinegears.com. They are based in Florida just down the street from ZF's US HQ. ZF does not sell direct to the public. As for parts drawings, manuals, etc. try Google for them. That's how I found drawings for my transmission and v-drive. BTW my leak was at the prop shaft coupling on the v-drive. My trans unit (ZF 45C) was fine. If your leak is in the same place and if you have a Response (direct drive) the pulling the trans should be straight forward. A v-drive is a little more trouble. Also, your HSW450D is really a 45C unit. My trans is a 45C mated with a v-drive unit and thus re-designated a 45IV. Finding a 45C service manual online should be fairly straightforward. If you can not find one let me know. I can email you my PDF copy.

Thanks for the info!   I called them and just ordered a complete rebuild kit.  The two seals that are likely the source of the leak were $70 collectively, so I opted for the complete rebuild kit (which was only $110).    Wish me luck!!

Please take pictures and document if you're able!

I’ll do my best.  In talking to the tech today, he mentioned that a brand new Zf 45c is only like $1100, so even if I totally eff it up, I guess it’s not a complete catastrophe!

Fingers crossed 🤞
