Starter Problem-Mercruiser

Recommended Posts

I have a 1987 Malibu Sunsetter with a Mercruiser 250HP engine.

Recently, the boat has not been starting. I am getting voltage. What I have been doing to get it started is to tap the starter with a hammer in several locations. The tapping is moderately hard. It has done the trick for me in getting the engine to turn over. I have to do this the first time I try to start it each day and later that day after floating a while with it off, I am able to rev the engine very high with some threading to get it to turn but ocassionally need to tap the starter with the hammer again.

My question is this--Is this an indication that I need to replace my starter, or is it something else?

Thanks in advance for anyones response.
