2011 RLXI no drive

Recommended Posts

Hi

I have a hunch but would like some input or thoughts.

350 monsoon with 680 hours.

Pulling a skier today when it was like the boat wnt into neutral.

Stopped straight away & found we had no forward or reverse gear, no sound, no nothing.

Shaft from the transmission is not turning when in gear, when we turn the prop the shaft turns so we know the prop shaft is in one piece.

Recent history,

last 3 months noticed it was not a smooth putting into gear.

slight rattle from the transmission area.

Thinking the damper plate.?

2011 is electric shift.  My money is on bad throttle control.

Yep, all fly by wire so without diagnostic gear hard to trace faults.

Would you expect it to appear to jump out of gear while underway with the bad throttle control?

Boat is 3 hours away at the river so hard to spot check items. Just wanting a plan for when I bring the boat home so I have a starting point

If the solenoid or the power to the throttle is faulty then it would jump to neutral as soon as the on signal to the solenoid went away.  Since you say no forward or reverse then I would be looking at the incoming power to the throttle control or the solenoid grounds that should be back near the trans.

Of course, I'm wondering about fluid level. Next would be the shaft coupling to the tranny.

Steve B.

Fluid was the 1st check, followed by the output shaft of the transmission to see if this turned.

Good fluid & no turn.

Thanks for the thoughts

Little more clarification, "Shaft from the transmission is not turning when in gear,"

So, you can put it in gear andhear the clunk, see the coupler on the transmission output turn, but shaft/prop doesn't spin?

removed & re connected the forward & reverse plugs on the transmission just in case a dirty connection on the day.

Can;t recall if these plugs were only 2 wires.

If they are & I can track down what voltage reading I should expect, this would isolate the electrical fault Vs mechanical.

Would the engine need to be running or just power on & select gear for the solenoid to engage for this check?

Id assume engine needs to be running, but dont know.

Found a tip for the transmission solenoids & damper plate to check.

As long as power is on ready to start (but not running), just put it into gear & we should here/feel a click after all it is a mechanical solenoid.

As far as the damper plate, remove the inspection plate & look for loose bits.

Will have to rule out these checks

An update from the mechanic

Electrics check out OK

The idea of removing the ball housing cover plate like in a car sounded good, but, being in a boat so close to the bottom, the plate could not be removed only allowed 3/8" of a gap on the engine side of the flywheel so could'nt see any loose bits from the damper plate.

Started it & put in gear with the dip stick out & we could see the fluid sloshing around so this tells us it is still connected thru the damper plate.

Next check was fluid pressure from the lines to the cooler. This showed a problem with it well down.

So, transmission is out of the boat & off to a specialist to sort it out.

I can feel another BOAT comming on 'Break Out Another Thousand'

He is backed up 2 weeks & with the Commenwealrh Games on the Gold Coast, where he operates, he is closed for a week.

Hoping for some news by the end of April

Received the boat back a few weeks back.

Repaired the ZF transmission & re shimmed all the tight tollerence clearences so I am told it runs like new, nice & tight.

Didn't worry about a water teat as the transmission worked fine in the work shop & the mechanic tells me there should not be any issues ont eh water so unless I wanted to nwater test, it is not essential

Took it out today for a run.

40 min in & after a few barefoot runs, I get the transmission high temp alarm & the boat reducs speed.

I suspect even if I had a water test, unless runnignhard for 30 min, it would not have shown any overheating warnings.

Stopped the boat & engine temp is fine, transmission cooler is cool to touch so water flow thru the transmission cooler is fine.

But, the transmission hoses both in & out of the transmision cooler & transmission  are so hot, I can't hold my hand against them for more than a few seconds.

Just for laughs, pulled the transmission cooler looking for any blockages, nil all clear.

So we ran back to the ramp at 1000 rpm & noticed a intermittant sound, a bit like a bearing spinning inside the housing.

Back to the mechanic next week.

Would there be any chance of a transmission oil line blockage at the transmission cooler?

And, I now have transmission oil in my bilge, not happy.

Was oily around the breather so hoping it is just heat related as the oil level is where it should be on the dip stick.

Would be interested in any suggestions for the cause.
