Under Gunwale Lights

I hate festoon light bulbs.

For those of us with older vessels, what LED light did you use to replace those ancient under the gunwale “hockey puck” lights??

I’m not completely sold on these yet, but these could be a good solution.  https://www.boatpluglight.com/collections/accessories/products/gunwale-rgb-accent-light-pods

Any info on what LED I should consider is much appreciated! 😎

I just changed the puck lights with stick on LED strips.   Spliced them in and they work great.  They are the cheap LEDs you can buy off amazon.

Thank you.

I was also considering going with the strip LED lights, but was just hoping there was an easy, simple  “plug and play” solution for the hockey pucks

If I go strip lighting, this looks like a solid choice. Thoughts anyone? https://www.boatpluglight.com/collections/accessories/products/rgb-5050-led-strip-lights-submersible-waterproof?variant=27437611459

Those will work, no doubt. Do you want RGB type. I think I bought a 25' roll on ebay of white for like $10. cut to length, solder wires, connect. I think I spent more on good double sided tape than I did the lights.

Do you all just wire these directly off a switch?  Being that they are LEDs, I would imagine the current draw would be more than the switch could handle.

LEDs draw less current.. so the switch will be able to handle. (The current draw between a incandescent and LED is the same if you replace a 5 watt incandescent with a 5 watt LED.. However a LED are brighter and a lower wattage would be used resulting in a lower current draw.)

I switched the light bulbs in the hockey pucks for LED like this: https://www.amazon.com/31mm-Festoon-White-DE3022-DE3175/dp/B004ZVXFZ2

A lot brighter and less wattage. The link is just an example i'm not sure of the exact size of the lights.

Here is the correct size (42mm), great result for under 10$ :)

Do you remember the kit you purchased? This looks perfect. We’re you able to just splice in the old wiring without adding any controllers?

It was very generic and just random parts I had laying around.

Lights like this: https://www.amazon.com/Water-resistance-Waterproof-Flexible-Cuttable-Lighting/dp/B01HRMOM8O/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1520999955&sr=8-12&keywords=led%2Bstrip%2Blights&th=1

Then I just got some spade connectors that I crimped on in place of the original lights.
