New SurfBand with Volume Control

As far as I know, the volume control on the new four function surf band only works with the new medallion viper controller module and the medallion stereo in the 2018 Malibu and Axis boats.  The new Malibu touch screens are just touch screens with cat6 cables connected to a separate viper control box, unlike the 2015 to 2017 Malibu where the controller was built into the 7 inch display.

1st surfnand was 17 right?  No way they were going backwards compatible past that

1st surfband was 2016 and it could be retrofitted to 2015 (i did this). I don't know where the cutoff was, or if there is one, but you have to have the big Maliview (~12") touchscreen to even think about surfband.

I haven't dug in to a 2018 boat yet, but since the prior years radios were Rockford Fosgate black boxes (OEM'd by someone else as far as I can tell) the control signals from the dash computer to the radio head may be different, so I doubt it's possible to control the radio.

_IF_ my local dealer will let me try a swap, or I can talk to someone in Malibu Tech Support, I'll see if the receiver module is the same for 2015/2016 as 2018; if so, then only the band may need to be upgraded to get stereo control. My guess is that it might just be a new set of signal pulses from the band to the receiver module and it interacts with the control bus the same way as a remote volume button.

...now I'm thinking about how cool this upgrade would be. I don't need to spend time/money on this!

Anyone an RF specialist? Find us a solution to make the surf band work reliably! Receiver gain or something! Maybe a TX hack resistor swap or delete to make transmitter much stronger.. ie non FCC compliant! Lots of YouTube videos on that for most rf tx but haven't opened my surf band yet.. but might be worth a shot since it's worthless now..

got one with my 2018. it also only works if you have tower speakers.

That's how it's designed to work. It controls tower speaker volume only. That way you are not making the people in the boat deaf.

Like I said earlier guys, the new one will work on 2017 models.

If you have to have tower speaker volume control on a '15 or '16 get an axis SB. Wear both if you want to control the wedge also.

What’s this?? I have a 2016 with surf band and really don’t use it but would love the volume control! Is this an add on possibility with another device?
