After 15-20 years you pull the starter out and replace it with one that has fresh grease on the Bendix;)

I guess I'm just about due for some fresh grease and accompanying starter. (17 years)

So they think they're funny in the manual?  Maybe we should change the belts every year too?

Why would they do that?

They assume your bilge is full of water and rusting anything low in the engine bay. idk

My old Mercruiser had an inspection hole in the bell housing, but idk if you could see the bendix.

No idea, but I've never greased a bendix in anything, nor had one be the cause of a starter failure.
