Cutting out plastic to make room for speakers.

Got a 2008 wake setter.  The center section on the back seat has a spot for two 6.5 speakers.  To use marine speakers I would have to cut the plastic compartment behind the speakers.  Bad idea?  It looks like if I cut it, the smell of the engine area might make it's way inside.  Is there a mod for this?

I dont see that panel being sealed in any that prevents engine bay fumes from entering the cabin. yes, it can be a tight fit for some speakers. What about a spacer ring between the speaker and boat.

I have the same boat. You should be able to get a lower profile/shallow speaker that will fit.  I swapped mine out a few years ago for the new RF Marine grade speakers and it wasn't an issue.
