Out of Gas...

Hello All,

Got myself a 2004 Sportster earlier this year. Been all giddy ever since. Just found out the fuel guage isn't quite accurate But now I have another problem... the fuel pump won't energize with the ignition @ ON. The pump is working when I apply 12 volts, but there's a relay or a fuse or something that isn't playing nice?? I've bled the lines of the fuel rails and when shorting the pump, the engine goes vroooooommmm... so it's just the power to the pump.

If anyone knows of a fuse block hidden somewhere... a relay that needs reset, or ANYTHING that will make this thing live again, please let me know!

Thanks all for your time and assist.

Leland,

I am assuming you have a Vortec 310 carb engine. Fuel pump power comes from a fuel safety switch, which is mounted behind the intake manifold to the left of the distributor. It should have 2 or 3 spade connections on it. It's likely that switch is bad. Jump it there to test it, and then just order a new fuel safety switch.

If you have an EFI engine such as the Monsoon or LCR 320, fuel pump power should be from the engine ECM. Look under the ECM shroud for a fuse bank/connector that holds 3 fuses - I believe they are 20 amp each. Good chance one of those is blown.

Thanks Peter,

It's an EFI and I'll check the fuses and let you know what I find. I appreciate the help.

Since it's an EFI make sure the red plastic safety switch retainer is installed on the normally open push button switch below he throttle.

...my wife knows exactly what that switch does.... she pulled it off one time while I was parking the truck and forgot to tell me. SHe diddn't know what it was at the time. I spent forever tearing the boat apart looking for a blown fuse.... Boat would crank, but no fuel pump. Mad.gifCry.gif

Thanks Again Peter,

You were right on the money! Biggrin.gif I never saw the fuse block when I was looking at the relays. It's flat and just hanging on the plate at the back of the motor. I pulled the cap off and there they were... three little blue 15 amp fuses... one blown all to crap. I replaced it with one of the spares from under the hood of my truck, turned the key and.. Yahoo.gif VROOOOOMM

I talked with a service guy in Mobile AL this morning... wanted me to tow the boat there (71 miles-one way!) to run diagnostics?

Let's see... that's 140 miles at 14 miles per gallon at $3.00 each...

plus the $75 service charge and $50 diagnostic analysis...

along with 3 hours driving time and 4 hours watching them fiddle fart around pretending to check whatchamacallits and thing-a-ma-bobs...

comes toooooooo... multiply that... add those... carry the one... decimal point goes here...

Holy cows Peter... I owe you dinner at Outback... and beers!

Thanks again Peter, your insight was obviously valuable and if you're ever in Pensacola...

Have a great day brother,

Leland
