Shorestation Winch Cable - replacement?

I just inspected my lift and notice slight fraying on my winch cable when I lowered the bunks all the way down.  Are you guys using galvanized or stainless cables for winch cable replacement?  I guess there are pros and cons of each.

Thanks.

Stainless.  That's all I've ever used.  Make sure you get exactly the right length. You don't want too long or too short.  Also a good time to inspect/replace any bushings in your pulleys and grease/oil bearings in the winch.

I use stainless. I have had much better service out of it. I used galvanized one time and it only lasted one year.  I have vertical lifts but if you have cantilever its so easy to change I  might not be as concerned. Then might look at price.

Tips on oiling greasing bearings/bushings?

Depends on exactly what type you have, but generally if the pulley (sheave) feels loose (up/down) or is binding at all then disassemble and replace the bushing.  They are mostly bronze sacrificial wear bushings (a few are ball bearing) and must be the right ID, OD, and length so best to get them from a dealer.  When putting them back together I add some marine grease to the OD of the bushings.

If a pulley freezes it will fray a cable real quick and may damage the bolt and pulley too.  That can happen if there is some kind of externally caused damage or if the bushing either wears out or spins on the bolt.

Of course, do all of this with the boat off the lift.  Raise the lift and tie it up in at least 2 places, then reverse the motor while pulling the cable to get some slack in the system so you can inspect the pulleys - and the rest of the cable.

Yeah, mines out of the water now.  I just lowered the bunks last night and noticed fraying in the winch cable.  I just ordered a new SS winch cable to and will plan to install later this week.  I will look at the pulleys and bushings while at it.

Thanks.

Be cautious, in fact nearly all boat lift winch spools and especially pulleys sizes are smaller than recommended bend/wrapping radius for cable sizes thus why they don't last as long as they should . As mentioned above probably less scary on a cantilever lift as there is nearly no weight on the cable when it is all the way up but on vertical lift the weight is always on the cable 100% of the time so I would replace .

Also pre start the cable wrapping smoothly side to side. Often people lower their winch too far releasing tension on cable then it starts overlapping itself and leads to Cable fraying/wear a lot quicker in the winch box.

Also if you need parts I have ordered a ton of stuff from boatliftanddock.com and they have always steered me the right way. They spent hours helping me one day convert my lift for V-Drive and I bought it used on craigslist.

I installed the new ss winch cable tonight.  Easy job and it took about an hour.  There was a great diy with pics on teamtalk that helped.
