Removing trailer guide posts

Just took delivery of 20 VTX.  The guide posts on the trailer make the boat/trailer a bit too wide to back into my garage.  They are removable by removing the two bolts per pole holding them in place.  I can do that and then reinstall when I take it out of the garage but I was hoping someone might have a simple alternative to the bolt/lock nuts securing the poles on the trailer.  Something maybe a little more convenient?

I suppose you could replacement the nuts with wingnuts, but I'd be concerned with them coming loose.

You could also drill a bolt with the perfectly positioned hole that a cotter pin would hold in place fairly tightly.  May work depending on how the guide posts secured.

same issue, I got 3/8x 3 pins and cotter pins but I feel the design was half a** and requires the post to be bolted tight. The Bolt passes thru the trailer angle and then thru the pipe. I'm going to see if I can get it tight with using washers, but optimistic. If the bolt passed thru trailer, then pipe, and then thru trailer again I think it would work fine.

Well I have came up with a solution. I cut the bottom 6" of guide post and sleeved it with a 12" piece of 1 9/16 pipe. Then pinned the top piece with a soon to be 3/8 stainless pin. B72839BC-BE9C-4883-B61C-611045CC76E7_zps

good concept but id have figured out how to pin it using the existing joint.  Those steel inner tubes are going to rust solid pretty quickly since they will get dunked when launching.  Judging by the pads you are a local guy, if you wind up wanting to weld them back together let me know.

I did the same on my 06 VLX Boatmate. Used solid bar inside not tube. never rusted solid because I had to remove it every week when putting in garage.

Excellent work!!!!!

It is such a PITA to unbolt the guide posts each time we go out, or come home... I would have paid more for some type of easily removable option.

 Thanks

Finished it up, Thanks again for the engineering. I went 14'' long on the stainless sleeve.

@Koeh0083 Where did you find 1 9/16" pipe at?  Any changes that you would make?

So I'm trying to find where I got it in stainless. You can get steel in 1 9/16 online from a few places online. The first time I did it was with steel, but we work with stainless all the time and we were scrapping a carwash out and it was on it. The steel held up fine since I remove them 90% of the time for storage and they are never submerged for long periods. As far as doing anything different, I though I was saving time and predrilling the hole that the pin go thru but it was actually easier to do with a second set of hands on being on the trailer already. Otherwise no it has worked great and a lot of others that have seen it in person are doing it to their trailer for even seasonal storage.

You can see the sleeves are even with the trailer wheel well...or if not, (because my picture resizing skills are limited), take my word for it.
