New Vinyl, Should I Change Color

I'm working on overhauling my '02 Wakesetter and have almost decided to have all the vinyl redone. If i do this should I change the colors up a bit or keep it the same? I'm having a hard time imagining it different than how it is now.

Looks like it's pretty consistent with the outside of your boat in the other thread.  The lighter colors are clean looking.  That engine cover seems like it's begging for another accent.  I think it would look great adding a darker gray, nothing overwhelming, something to further highlight the vinyl pattern in the boat.  You could also make this a different texture material like the newer boats do which changes the look.  You have that second smaller stripe, looks like it might already be another subtle color, I'd be inclined to make that pop.

One thing to keep in mind, the darker colored accents always seam to split first.

good call. I dont have any splits after 16 years. It just got really dingy and stained

I think your color scheme is very good, and fits the rest of your boat.  But I also think a different texture would be a great call, like @2THEL8K mentioned.  When I was at the boat show this year there are some really neat textures (probably expensive too), and using some of that (engine cover, maybe some seat backs, etc.) would make your interior feel like a new boat and not a 2002 boat.

You know, other than that engine cover and stain on the observer's seat back, the rest of it doesn't look all that bad.  Have you tried scrubbing it down?

I know! Actually the engine cover is grass and dirt where i had it upside down last night and the observers seat should clean too. I used about 6 back to back applications of Starbrite in the fall. It got it pretty clean but it is still kinda dingy. That real bright white is gone. I torn whether to replace it

Have you tried any bleach?  I have used Chlorox Clean-up on tough stuff, and it has done the trick.  Obviously, you have to rinse the heck out of it when done to save the stitching, but it has worked.

Do you use 303 Aerospace Protectant?  That might help put a shine on the stuff that is clean but not glossy.

i did use a 10:1 bleach mix along with the Starbrite. I have not used 303 yet. I did get the Starbrite mildew blocker but have not tried it yet

Also, magic erasers are basically the wet-sanding equivalent to vinyl.  They do wonders.

If all else fails I was gunna try this. I was worried about burning through the top but I really dont have much to loose.

Personally, knowing you have a lot to fix and wanted to maintain a budget on this boat - trying cleaning it up first.

For the carpet, break out the power washer.  It will do magic to those carpets (and the amount of nasty that comes out will be surprising).  Wet vac it after power washing.  You may want to even do it twice just to really get it sparkling.

For the Vinyl, I'd first start with some Boat Bling Vinyl Sauce or 303.  Do an initial wipe down first.  Follow up by a liberal application + nylon brush (wiping away the nasty stuff regularly).  Then do it again.  Lastly, follow up with the Magic Eraser for any spots that just won't clear up.  Finish with some Conditioning Sauce.  I think you could probably get those to at least the good enough stage.

OK, im going this route first. I have nothing to loose but a few bucks in cleaners. I did powerwash the carpet once but i didnt use a cleaner with it. I may try to spray it down with resolve or something similar first.

Here's a good reference point.  I did an engine overhaul and pulled the gas tank while I was at it.  20 years of nasty, nasty stuff under that tank.  Cleaned it with simple household chemicals, some soaking, and some scrubbing.   I did not use the Chlorox stuff on the carpet, that was for the bilge.

So some agitation (with a brush or a power washer) should help it out a long way.

Edit: +1 on the shopvac, that really helps pull out the dirt once it is loosened up.
