Suck Gate Thumb Tabs

Recommended Posts

Looking to see if anyone ever found a brand of double suction cup that the thumb tabs aren't breaking for their suck gate.  Or did anyone fabricate some?

That was the only issue I ran into with mine last summer and while the boat is hibernating, before I start my spring maintenance next month, I'd like to get the tabs resolved.

I know there are countless threads out there on the suckgate but I couldn't find a post specifically addressing the thumb tabs.

I am into 2 of the red $8.00 Harbor Freight versions so it's one per season at this point. I started building them for some buds and they are buying the aluminum housing versions online which do not appear to be of a much better quality plastic handle but they are thicker. I am looking into aluminum stock to build some as replacements. I am trying to decide on whether I want to use square tubing or solid stock. The tubing will be a lot easier to work with so I may go the easy route first. I will post up my results when I finally get around to it.

Something to think about, the reason these Harbor Freight ones keep breaking is that they are being used in a manner not intended, underwater.  This means you are trying to expand water, instead of air when installing.  That ain't going to happen.  The result is broken levers, not to mention the difficulty moving the levers.  After mine broke, if fabricated some aluminum ones that had the pin hole positioned such that it moved the suction cup less.

Good info.  I figured I would end up fanning something, but wanted to check here first.  There's a small machine shop not far from my house that I am thinking about chatting with just to see what we can come up with.

Ive got 3 handles and about 4 extra thumb tabs but it's not a problem I want to deal with all year.
