New Board Recommendations

I'm looking to upgrade from the beginner CWB Ride board that we currently have. Its slow and HUGE. I rode @Stevo's Soulcraft HC-Pro and loved it..........except the price :) My wife also wants a new board so I can't be quite as selfish as i'd like to be.

The other factor is obviously my size and our boats surf wake. Im 6ft1 and about 200lbs. Our boat has a decent surf wake but being a DD with about 2000lbs of ballast its never going to have the same push that a loaded up v-drive does. That being said it is likely that we'll be upgrading in the next 6-9 months so i don't want to get something solely suited to our current wave.

In general i think i'm looking for something thats faster than the CWB with a little more buoyancy, smaller and easier to start getting some air on.

Suggestions? Budget is probably around $500 or so

If you want a Soulcraft and are looking for a good deal I'd call Pat at Northwest Boat Sports. He has awesome prices on the Soulcrafts he has in stock and had a number of different sizes of the HC Pro in particular. I just bought a 4'7" board from him. I'm a little lighter than you and I know he has a couple (or did) HC Pros in larger sizes.

Ended up with a soulcraft and love it!

Cool! I've been on the fence about a Honu or HC pro, just can't bring myself to dropping that kind of coin on one w/o being able to demo one.

Put out the word in your area, i am sure there is someone on here with one you could hook up with for a ride.

for what its worth, i wish i wouldn't have bought all the cheaper boards before breaking down to but the SC-HCPRO. bought several ronix boards that i ended up trading in or selling with a little $$ hit just to find a board i loved. I thought that board was the carbon thruster, but one ride on the HCpro from a fellow crew member and i had mine on order within a few weeks.

^yep, same here. Bought two used liquid force to start with, grew bored with them quickly (like after 2 days!) then bought a new Ronix powertail last year, surfed it all summer, but feel I maxed out the performance of it by the end of summer. Now, I'm ready to buy a board I can grow with, rather than one I grow out of in a month or two.

My buddy has already dropped over a grand in buying cheap boards looking for one he likes, and is doing the same. He's looking at P5, inland surfer and SC.

oh, and I live in WV, I don't think anyone lives around here with one.

I just need to call Jeff and see what's best for me in his opinion. I keep looking at the HC pro, but someone mentioned a blunt nose Honu as well. I'm 6'0, 210, so I'm thinking around a 4'8??

thanks for the info @Stevo

I was also worried about the coin without testing.  I did all the reading I could and took the advice of calling Jeff.  He asked plenty of questions to dial in the right board and size.  He is not a hard sell type of guy and has several models to fit different styles, wakes, and sizes.  I went with the Honu and couldn't be happier.

Better call Jeff today if you're thinking about an HC Pro. Sounds like those won't be available much longer.

After a couple rides on Stevo's, I am now hooked and trying to figure out how to fit it into the budget.  Also considering a Zombie custom made specifically for me to carry my heft. The HC pro such a different feel compared to my inland surfer boards (swallow V2 which I loved until I rode stevos SC and fly boy big boy which I never really cared for since it's not the right size for me). The SC feels so much more like I'm surfing rather than just riding the wave, if that makes sense.

If we get out again together sometime, you should ride my fang tail.  It has a lot more volume than the newer boards (i.e. lots of float).  Like I think @Stevo's board will fit in his racks and mine wouldn't.  You and I are definitely not the same size but I'd be curious how mine rides for you.

I've ridden my wife's emily several times.  It's thinner (less volume) and lighter and gets more air (or feels like it anyhow) but it's also a bit more work to keep in the pocket and isn't as forgiving as my board (which truth be told I think is a little "big" for me from a volume/weight perspective).

With a board with enough volume I think you'd get a lot more wave to play on.

Or just get a bigger wave and you can ride what ever you want.
