stainless vs aluminium prop shaft coupler ???

Recommended Posts

hey guys

I have to replace the prop shaft as well as the coupler on a 1990 malibu flight craft 18 xlt... I m looking for opinions on:

pros and cons on using  aluminum vs  stainless steel prop shaft coupler ?

the stock one was aluminum.

the one from A.R.E. are stainless. this is the one ski dim sells.  also  Elberts.

the typical ones from marine hardware are aluminum.

thanks guys, appreciate the help. -jay

With proper maintenance I doubt you will see a difference except in your wallet. In this application I would only see SS as a plus in a high torque application. You are going to get props slip regardless so I really don't see an advantage except in maybe a salt water environment and then maybe. Reciprocating mass comes to mind, maybe slower to spin up due the weight compared to AL, but ICBFOS. Mine as most of ours is aluminum and has been invisible for the most part.
