Winterize 2016 Ford Motor and store on lift?

Recommended Posts

I'm seriously thinking about leaving our boat on our covered lift all winter vs. putting it in the caves like I usually do.    It makes me a little nervous, but having access late and early in the season, as well as for off-season projects, is appealing.   I've been reading up a lot, but still have a few questions -

Does everyone disconnect the tube for the water cooled packing on the shaft for winterizing?  I assume so, but the manual makes no mention of it.

On the Ford 6.2 with Indmar tranny/v-drive -

I think there are 3 points to drain the engine per the manual - remove the raw water impeller, remove the anode on the heat exchanger, and then remove the hose connecting the exhaust elbows together.  Then pull the single plug off the tranny/v-drive.    Besides my heater lines, that should be it, right?

I'll pull the drain plugs from the hull, but it would have to be a heckuva storm to get under the slip's roof and past the cover to get much water in the boat.   I'll pull the cushions out of the boat and am looking at getting an over the tower cover for a little extra protection.   Anything else to watch out for?

Yes, hence why I think I know what to do on engine and tranny. But, no mention of the water cooled shaft. And given that the manuals aren't always known for being accurate, I am hesitant to trust it 100%.

Thanks!  I had been reading some more this morning and came to that conclusion as well.

Yeah, if you were a trailer boater you would get to enjoy the warm/hot water draining all over your hands and arms as you are trying to get the weeds off the prop and trailer ;)

This is only our 2nd year with the lift.   I've already forgot how hard life was when trailering all the time - and to think I didn't even have a water cooled shaft back then to make it even that much worse!   Although, the slip we rent has very little space on the docks for our gear, so it still feels like we do a lot of working coming and going all the time with all the gear our 3 kids :)
