Remove & Replace Damper Plate and Rear Main Seal questions ...

Recommended Posts

I have a question that may seem obvious and simple, however I want to clarify my understanding from reading all the related threads in order to make informed decisions before tackling replacing both my Damper Plate and Rear Main Seal on a 2003 Sunsetter LXi (DD).

When decoupling the prop shaft from the transmission, and subsequently removing the transmission, does moving the shaft aft in order to "create the room" for the transmission removal require the packing nut and packing to be removed and redone as well?

Any other advice for a damper plate remove & replace rookie from those of you who have done this?

moving shaft aft creates the a bit of room but not enough to pull trans.

scribe all motor mounts so you can put them back where they were.

loosen front motor mounts.  block under trans then remove rear motor mounts.

i had to remove trans cooler lines, fuel pump and a few ancillary items prior to rotating engine and transmission around the front motor mount.

i used a very short lifting sling on the trans tail+stock and a floor jack positioned above a protected hds.
