@pkenney:  usually the instructions will guide you as a sonar device will/may be sensitive to incident angle.  At a minimum mount of opposite side from water inlet or behind it and behind PP paddlewheel if equipped.  Best or required is on a level (parallel to water line) surface.  Take the proverbial deep breath when you fire up the drill to put a nice hole in a perfectly sound hull:)  Hummingbird seems to have a good set of instructions on the web.

I installed this one back in March. The transducer is located in the engine compartment behind the driver. Please note that when you drill the hole here a fair amount of water will come out even if your bilge is completely dry. This is because water get trapped between the shiny plastic and the fiberglass hull and is completely normal, so I hear. You will want to drill the hole a day or two before you install the transducer to allow all of the water to drain. I recommend using the 3M 5200 to make the seal but it is very sticky stuff. I'd cover the bottom of the transducer with painters tape to keep the 5200 off.
