alternator fair price

My 2012 Malibu Wakesetter VLX salt water series with a Monsoon 350 needed a new alternator and the charge was $495 for the alternator and $170 for the labor to install it.  A nondealer did the repair.  I tried but can't see a manufacturer or model on the unit.  I thought alternators were less and I saw them on ebay for $90, $100 and on amazon for $125.  Does the $495 sound reasonable or am I getting ripped off?  I figured they should charge me a markup of 20% over their cost.  Am I wrong?

One of those items that you could pay any amount for. I'd expect to pay less than $150 if I bought one, it would come from dbelectrical. Looks like bakes is $250-300 for what they sell.

Labor seems reasonable, good reason to DIY.

I was intimidated to even attempt any repairs until I joined this forum.   After trying several marine mechanics I realized if you want it done right you do it yourself.  If you have the time to invest it's way better.   You can always bring it to a mechanic if you fail.

Boat: 2002 Malibu Wakesetter VLX
Engine: Indmar Monsoon 325

Without too much backstory, I'm now in the market for a new alternator. Found these two websites with DRASTICALLY different prices for what I am assuming is essentially the same alternator (one is a replacement part number for the other).

Is this one of those cases where COST does not equal VALUE?

DB Electrical is a reputable company...I definitely try to support Bakes when appropriate some items are way overpriced.  If you're going through he effort to change alternators, I'd highly suggest the 110amp upgrade.  If you're really wanting to stay with that unit, the price is right.  I have a used one that was working and would be willing to hand it over if you want.

I've installed both a starter and an alternator that I bought from DB Electrical (on my houseboat).  No problems yet.

There are also places still around that will rebuild yours for less than you can buy one if you want to go that route in the off season.

Ok. Now you've peaked my curiosity.

110amp upgrade?

The only risk here is that you need to verify your boat's wiring is large enough for the upgrade.  Probably OK for the 105, but the 140 may exceed the amperage rating of your cabling.  At the time of my upgrade there was a 120amp model available, looks exactly as these (same form factor) but you may need a differently sized belt, due to the smaller pulley size.  The pulley on my new alternator was slightly smaller to achieve higher RPMs; worst case you keep your current pulley and you may not achieve the rating amperage for a given RPM.

I'm trying to change my alternator now on my 2008 Malibu wake setter. I removed the 2 screws that hold it in place and unhooked to wiring but it some how hung up where the first bolt was remove. Does someone know what I am missing to free it up for removal.
