Head Unit problems

I have a 2005 wakesetter 23 lsv. I'm currently having issues with the head unit and its a real head scratcher to me but maybe someone else has had this issue and can relay some advice.

I have the Sony-MEX-m70bt head unit and when i listen to it sometimes everything works great, but more times than i care to mention out of nowhere i lose capability to control the volume. Its like the volume knob doesnt work at all i can still travel thru the sources and turn it off and on but cannot adjust the volume or anything to do with the volume knob. But like i said it does work sometimes but then it goes back to just the volume knob not working.. very frustratiing. I'm about to buy another head unit and see if that does the trick as ive gotten a look at all the wires and i dont see anything screaming at me that looks loose or out of place. Do yall think this is just a head unit issue or could be deeper?

I think it is a head unit.  I had one do this one time and I had to completely shut it off and it would work then.  It would only work for a time and I would have to repeat the process.  Bought a different one then and never had the issue.

It was a sony and for what its worth...I bought another sony and no problems.  The problem i have now is that with the old head unit, no speaker noise.  With newer unit...slight speaker noise.  Go figure.
