Considering converting from MTC to switches and key start

Recommended Posts

I'm seriously considering converting the dash on my RTXi to a RLXR-style dash so I can move from the MTC to switches and a true key start.  I'm at the point where I need to decide to either keep the boat for a very long time or sell it.  I'm leaning towards keeping it because I like it so much, but would much prefer a simpler and bullet proof dash.

My question/s to you guys are:

  • Do you think this is even feasible?
  • If so, what would I need? I'm assuming a new cowling (from an LXR?), switches and a key start.  I wonder if the new cowling would fit in ok with where it mates to the armrest for the throttle.

I don't mind taking the whole dash apart, soldering, etc... to get everything wired back in. My bigger concern is how feasible this is and the cost.  Some of the cost could perhaps be offset by selling my working MTC.

Why?  If you want to use a key, you already have one by your circuit breakers.  If you want to make it more accessible then just mount it in the dash and extend the wires

I don't have a key, although I know that one can be added.  I get that.

But it's much more than that.  The MTC still controls lights, blower, etc...  If I'm going to decide to keep this boat for another 6-8 years the last thing I want is a single point of failure that runs me $1500 to repair when it goes bad and, frankly, in the end I would just much more prefer a simpler dash.  If I could spend $500-600 to convert to something that I will like a lot more for the next 6-8 years that's an easy decision for me.

Hmm, odd that a 2012 doesn't have a key but maybe the VTX got that a year early - only the 2011 VTX has the touch screen start and no key.

No reason you can't do what you want to do, but it'll reduce the value of the boat by a bunch if it is not reversible and you sell the parts needed to put it back when you sell it.

The 2011's and some early 2012's didn't have the key.  Mine is an early 2012.

Call it personal preference.  If I keep the boat for another 6-8 years and end up selling it w/ 1500 hrs on it the value is going to be diminished anyway.  Again, that's not my concern.
