For testing purposes you can bypass the crossover and play the midbass driver direct. However, you should never do the same with a tweeter unless you have a substitute filter, because the tweeter can be easily damaged with no filter. In this case the damage was already done, so no harm was done.  

If the midbass drivers voice coils do not rub and they similarly measure between 3.5 to 4-ohms DC resistance, then they are likely fine.
