Marina moorage buoy - slight scuff from buoy rubbing

We tied our boat up last week in the marina and notice after a week of in, out, and overnight moorage i have some scratches on my hull similar to what you would get if you left your cover on while driving. These are very light and can be buffed out but are noticable as they dulled the shine of my hull.

I used a standard G3 buoy and it was tied to the dock for ease of in and out. I bought a hull hugger but couldn't use it tied to the dock as it was too long and floated in the water. I like having my docking equipment secured to the dock, when we come in we simply pull the bungees to the hull and we are out!

What is the best solution?

Have you tried putting a cover on the buoy?

My only other thought is that having it secured to the dock does not allow it to move with the boat causing it to rub on the boat instead or rolling or rubbing on the dock.

That is a great point. I haven't had this happen before and in the past I've always attached the bumpers to the boat not the dock. By attaching to the boat I allow the bumper to move with the boat. Thanks for bringing this to light!!

I've had bad experience with the cheap bumpers or buoys like you seem to be using. Depending on how your dock set up is I would recommend either the exile bumper balls found here, if those are still out of stock I've heard of people using these children's Hippity hop balls. Or if you want something smaller, the standard waterski buoy found here.

We use the water ski ones, as our dock is extremely low profile so they don't float up and over the dock.

I have had great success with that fabric I mentioend.  I did a lot of research and prior to using fabric I was polishing fender scratches out every year.  Second year using it and not a single blemish.  I have heard good things about th hippy balls but I don't have the clearence at my normal dock.  Boat blanket has saved me a ton of work.  It had great reviews on the web and I am a believer now... I don't think you will be disappointed if you go that route.  It looks like it would be a abrasive but no problems for me even when I have to tie off tight on a dock.
