2003 Wakesetter XTI - Odd Starting Issues

Recommended Posts

Hey all, thanks for the help in advance. I've owned this boat its whole life (it has standard 335 Monsoon FYI) and have never had an issue starting up until this season. I did the standard de-winterization and was able to get it to turn over right after pulling it out of the garage after winter. But now, the boat either hesitates to start or there is just nothing when the key is turned. When I say nothing I mean that I am able to stick the key into the ignition and whether I turn it to accessory position or starting position nothing happens. No noises. After repeating the process of sticking/turning the key in the ignition (still with nothing) for a couple of minutes the boat randomly starts. And when it does finally start sometimes it starts immediately, other times it hesitates. And every so often, the boat will start fine, no messing with key in/out of ignition. Battery voltage is good. Weird issue and I'm not even sure of the first thing to check. Any advice is much appreciated!

Ignition switch is plausible. The retaining nut on the rear of the cylinder sometimes comes loose, then you might have a loose wire. +1 to cleaning the contacts

Not sure if this is common knowledge or not (sorry if it is): someone else (or a manual) mentioned on here a long time ago, that when you are starting, turn the key to the on position, but don't start it. Let it sit for 30 seconds or so, then turn it over. My understanding is that this primes the fuel line.

Also check the wiring/ground on your starter. Might be a good idea to pull your starter off completely, give it a once over, clean the wire contacts, and lube the bendix.
