Warranty work...dealer or certified marine mechanic?

So, let's just say worse case scenario my transmission is shot. Do I use the local mechanic or pull it 200+ miles to a dealer?

I have a local certified marine mechanic who does great work on 100k-1m dollar offshore boats. He's not an inboard guy but I trust him and his mechanics are the best around.

Or

I pull it a couple hundred miles to a dealer...

You would need to contact Indmar (or Malibu) and make sure they will pay for it if the mechanic is not Indmar certified.  Pretty sure that your broke transmission would fall under the Indmar warranty not the Malibu - but worth checking.  This is assuming that you have the warranty.  If no warranty then I'd use whoever is convenient, swapping out a trans isn't rocket science.

Chances are you have a local Indmar dealer who is closer than your Malibu dealer. As Indmar handles their own warranty I suspect they will be ok with any certified Indmar shop handling it.

Otherwise chances are they will not cover it under warranty and any damage that could result from an improper install would not be covered as well.
