Transmission/V-drive whine on decel

Went out for an early session this morning with my 01 23 lsv. 500 lbs.each rear locker and ski locker ballast filled with a 250 on top of it. Half way through the first pull sounded like a couple bangs like I ran over a log or something.  Dumped bags and took the boat off no visible damage underneath prop, wedge, rudder and entire bottom of boat look fine.  On the way back to the dock when I decelerated(hard) there was a whining noise either from the transmission or the gearbox, repeated this under soft deceleration and no whine.  Any ideas on what the whining noise is?  Also v-drive and transmission fluids seem clean and full.

I'm thinking maybe the U-joints in the v-drive are going bad but I'm really shooting in the dark.  Any ideas would be appreciated.
