2003 Malibu Wakesetter VLX V-Drive red light won't shut off

Recommended Posts

I have 2003 Malibu that the Red V-drive light won't shut off. I check fluid run it up over 1200 RPMs and it stays on. It doesn't sound bad or feel hot. Looking for some help. It 3 weeks before I can get it in shop. So I am looking for thoughts, ideas, anything. If V-Drive is bad anyone have idea what it costs to replace or rebuild and how hard would it be to remove myself but I don't wanna get to far over my head.

Thanks.

This may sound crazy and not meant to insult you but.... Are you 100% sure that the light is on. I say this because I used to always glance at mine and think that it was on but it was just the way the sun was hitting it. Just a thought.

Also, if there is any possibility that the fluid could be low, I would add a little bit and see if that does anything.

No your fine I will listen to anything. When I am running it I hold my hand down there and get a red glow from it. I am 99.9 percent sure it's on the whole time but next time I go out I will have my wife drive it while I watch it. But yes I have checked fluid added a little. There's no leaks anywhere.

Has any electrical work been done to it and is the light on even with the key on and the engine turned off? If your fluid level is good I would think you have a bad sensor at the VD.

Not that I know of. I will check it today to see if it comes on when I turn key on. Do you happen to know where sensor would be located on vdrive. I do know this boat has 300 hrs on it. It's been sitting outside with no cover, sun faded bad. I been doing some deep cleaning on it every night.

The switch is activated to open and turn the light out when the pressure in the system is 2 psi or greater. The Indmar P/N for the switch is 903004S.

I am ordering a new sensor today. I went last night turned the key to on position and light was on with boat not running so hopefully this will work. Thanks for the advice from everyone on here it really helps.

I have another question. There are 2 dipsticks the orange one that you add your mercon in. But the black dipstick forward of that it has a blueish looking fluid in it the level is good. Just curious of why there is 2 different fluids or if they even have anything to do with each other.
