cap and rotor removal 2012 Monsoon 350

Recommended Posts

I did plugs and wires this spring, but have not done the cap and rotor on this boat.  I'm pretty sure the PO didn't do it, so I need to but have not done so yet.  Boat has just north of 200 hours on it.

EDIT:  FYI, the cost of the cap and rotor are cheaper at Skidim than Amazon.

What are you looking at on skidim?  They look more expensive for the standard aluminum delco stuff.  Could be missing other options though - skidim site pretty much sucks for finding anything

Amazon

Rotor - $10 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BYGD2O/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Cap - $37 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BYD3RC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Skidim

Rotor - $21 http://www.skidim.com/ROTOR-DISTRIBUTOR-VORTEC-HVS/productinfo/R103011/

Cap - $48 http://www.skidim.com/CAP-DISTRIBUTOR-VORTEC-HVS/productinfo/RA108009/

It appears as if Bake's is even higher priced at $80 for the pair. Concur, good catch OJ.

OK, now that I have done this I have a little advice.  This is on a 2012 VTX so others may vary

1) You can't actually take the top of the plenum all the way off unless you disconnect the remote oil filter from its bracket (I think).  You can move it back far enough to get to the cap though once you take out the 6 bolts

2) It sucks getting at those torx screws and not dropping them when you remove them.  Mine were insanely tight

3) Buy a brass cap and rotor - you don't want to be doing this very often

4) Waiting until it is 90 degrees in the garage to do it is a bad idea

Old cap and rotor looked pretty bad.  Lots of corrosion and wear on the cap pins and the rotor blade had some discoloration and wear on the corners.  Unfortunately my #8  plug wire had the outer ring on the distributor side split in half.  Not entirely sure it wasn't already like that since it just fell out in 2 pieces.  Likely will still work but I'll have to get another wire to be safe.  Not sure when I'll have time to try it out, too stormy to pull it outside on the hose and tomorrow is grad party day.  Maybe sunday if the forecast is wrong.

I replaced mine this spring. I had 300 hours on it and you could feel a slit miss. New plugs and rotter and cap and she is running like a champ. I did go with brass!

Accel brand is available at many auto parts stores and contacts are brass. Call around.

Just got mine thru Advance Auto. If you use the TRT30 discount code and order on line you can get Accel brass for $53.89 before your local tax.

The TRT30 code can be used on anything and saves you 30% on your purchase. Saved $23.09 on the rotor/cap.

Yes and no.  Yes it fits and it is likely what came on it from the factory - it will have aluminum contacts

Better off with ACCEL 120141 and 130141, which are brass.  Little more money, but worth it from an lifespan perspective

The reviews on that one at amazon are pretty lousy......   I have not replaced my original yet and have had no problems..... from the looks of this thread it looks like you stuck with OEM as well.   Any issues.

Said differently is that extra $30 going to get me another 2 years of use or another 150 hrs?

I actually swapped out the OEM with an ACCEL.  The OEM I installed in this thread was a short term fix that got replaced with an ACCEL a few months later when I was having another misfire issue. (unrelated to cap as it turned out)  It all depends on if you are having issues.  In my boat the cap is pretty susceptible to moisture since the pylon seems to drain right onto it.

Should also mention that the second time I replaced it I pulled the plenum all the way off.  IT wasn't that bad, but had to disconnect a couple wiring connectors to the throttle body and some sensor.

Any pictures of the second time?

What is the part number for the cap and rotor.  Amazon link with the brass one for the 350 would be great.

I have never changed mine with over 600 hours. 2010 LSV. Always stored indoors and never with any water in the hull.
