Could my motor really need moved this far for shaft alignment?

Well all I have read just about every alignment thread on here. So this is where I'm at. Took loos the bolts coupler and went underneath cause I couldn't spin shaft (I grabbed the prop and spun it about 3 revolutions. Anyways what I saw was the shaft sitting off to the side of the coupler. About 3/4" off to the side. I spun the shaft now by hand and didn't see any indications of a bent shaft. Then went back under boat, no play in cutlass bearing and the shaft looks to be very centered in the hull opening. The boat did have a pretty noticeable vibration while coming out if the hole. I don't know if it's ever been algnided in the 14 years of its existence could it be this far off? Yeah, it's possible that things have shifted that far. I've seen photos of worse.
But it's also possible that the strut is bent eeeeeeeever so slightly, which moved the angle off a fraction of a percent, and that would make it exaggerated at the transmission end. 

I would check the cutlass bearings to see if it's worn more on one side than the other. And if not, then I say get out your big boy britches, pry bar, and start movin' a motor around and see if the vibration goes away.

 

I'm super familiar with the running gear right now. I've been intimate with mine this week. ha

Cutlass looked good, I just noticed my typo it was more like 1/4" I'm thinking of shiming the strut with one flat washer then seeing where I am. But being that the shaft is pretty much dead on in the hull that's telling me my strut is good. I have also turned the shaft watching to see if there is any variance in the gap to the coupler. There is not.   At least in my head.  This is my first time messing with one and I know there is a lot of you that have probably forgot more about this then I will ever know. Thanks for any advice you're willing to share. Chris.

I'm not the guru at the top of the mountain on alignment, but I will offer my opinion.

The strut is designed to be a fixed point, the motor/trans was designed to be adjustable. While shimming the strut is an option, I lean towards adjusting the motor mounts FIRST, strut shimming as a last resort (or if the strut is bent ever so slightly and you need to get it back in line.)

 

That's my $0.02 worth. Others may have a differing opinion.

Im with you. It's not actually that far out. Just waiting for reinforcements to help me move it  thanks for your help.

With it being that far out of alignment I'd start from scratch for peace of mind.  Pull the shaft and check that its straight with a dial indicator then check that the coupler is square to the shaft.  Put the shaft back in and check that its centred through the bearing and the log.  Check your engine mounts.  I find they are sloppy at the best of times but if they have a lot of play or rubber is split, replace them.  If that's all good then use the engine mounts to align to spec which I believe is 0.003".  Mine have about 2 inches of adjustment in the vertical and horizontal.  I expect yours are similar.

 

I wish my bearing and log were in alignment.  To have the shaft true to the hull and bearing it is very far to one side of the log.  It will end up prematurely wearing the stuffing box.  Drives me crazy but I've learned to live with it.
