Mobile installers in CA Bay (Delta) Area?

Recommended Posts

SurfgateBob

Hi everyone,

Fairly certain my stock 12" sub is blown in my '13 LSV. I have the Rockford Fossgate Punch P500-2 amp and whatever sub they shipped with the boat. Amp is constantly in protect mode. I checked all the RCA, but haven't pulled the sub out of the enclosure. I occasionally smelled something when the bass was really going strong. For the tower, I have 4xRev10 on the tower and I never really had enough bass from the sub to keep up.

Does anyone recommend

1) A new Amp/Sub combo that will fit in the stock enclosure (not going to build a new one, unless I can find a great mobile installer). Wetsounds seems to have 2 12" subs and a small amp that will fit in the same footprint at the P500-2

2) An installer who'll come out to the boat (which lives on a lift) to do the installation.

Boat is in Discovery Bay, CA, near Stockton/Livermore/Pleasanton/Antioch/Brentwood. I really, really don't want to pull it out and have it sit out of the water for a long time.

Obviously willing to pay a premium for someone to 1) work on it and 2) do it right. Anyone recommend anyone?

Bob

A good specialist shop that works a lot on towboats will lose by traveling and the logistics of doing remote jobs, even if they charge a premium and charge for travel time and expenses. It takes their human resources away from a shop where they are infinitely more efficient. And this time of year they are slammed. If not, they're probably not a good choice anyway.

One route may be to contact local marinas and local big boat (cruisers, motor yachts) dealers, if either applies to your area. They should know of people who travel as their normal business model and are prepared in a very different way.

It's normally two trips. One to design the enclosure, a mount, and perhaps a facade, then back to the shop for fabrication, and then returning on another date to install the enclosure and equipment. There is no room for trail an error. They must get it right the first time or they lose big, even at a premium rate.

Tossing good money after bad.

May be worth looking into borrowing or renting a trailer and take it to the shop.

Why do you say that? Re good money after bad? Certainly someone has made a good replacement sub, no?

I have a trailer, I just don't live in the same place as the boat, nor is it close to a ramp, so it's a 4-5 hour affair to move it.

Putting a new woofer in that so called box, is a waste. You need a proper woofer enclosure built for which ever woofer you choose, even if it is the same brand/model as the OEM.

Yes, the Wetsounds XS12 subwoofer would be a fantastic replacement and upgrade, or a Rockford Fosgate certainly will pass. But the core issue is that the factory sub enclosure is not usable going forward and the return on your investment will only be as good as the enclosure. A) In the build quality, which is awful, and B) In a tuned instrument, which it is not. Like or not, that's what you're dealing with.

Btw, Bob, you don't have to trek all the way to the boat to get an understanding of the OEM enclosure. Many have posted photos of examples here on TMC.

Alright, you guys have convinced me. Now, does anyone know anyone in the CA Delta area who can set me up?

NorCal Mastercraft just opened up their relocated pro shop at Discovery Bay, you may want to check with them for a recommendation. There was a guy who just opened his own independent shop in Fairfield*, and when I talked to him last year at this time about doing some work he said something along the lines of "springtime is the Christmas season for boat shops, everything is delayed and costs more because people want their boat ready for the warm weather"

The lesson here is that the 4-5 hours you spend moving your boat to a shop means you might have what you want done in a few weeks and be on the water again; unless you have a ton of extra money burning a hole in your pocket you may want to reconsider your plan. Depending on how handy you are, the 4-5 hours to move the boat could be all the time you need to implement one of the many write-ups on sub replacement that are on TMC.

* I'll look for the contact info and post it here when I do find it, unless someone beats me to it...

Thanks guys - found a Wet Sounds local dealer in Brentwood who will come out and diagnose the problem for me. Chris at Mobile Solutions seems so far so good. If it's blown they'll build me a new box and install a new woofer and possibly a new amp.

I was going to say there is a guy that advertises on CL that works in the DB, Brentwood, Stockton area. Also a Wetsounds and JL dealer.
