Steering cable replacement how-to?

Recommended Posts

Is there a video or how to on replacing the steering cable on my '00 LSV? I have my shift cable and steering cable to replace. When I did my throttle cable I just electrical taped the new cable to the old cable and pulled it through with ease. However, this steering cable is considerably more bulky given the gearbox at the steering wheel... can I use the same method or? Im not sure how easy it will be to pull through. I dont want to start and get in a bind if there is a much easier way to route the new cable...

Well when I did my steering cable in my '01 VLX I just used a LOT more electrician tape to hold it together and it pulled through pretty well.  Though I did use some rope as an intermediate stage.  I pulled the rope through while removing the old cable and then used the rope to pull the new cable into place.  It went pretty smooth.  I was glad I had small hands to get the cable through those openings at either end though.  That was where things tended to get tightest.

Cut the rack off the steering wheel end of the cable using a bolt cutter or hack saw. Tape that end to the stern end of the new cable and pull it through from helm to stern.  That way you don't need to pull the rack through.  I always pull another line through in addition to the cable for when you'll want to pull a ballast pump wire, speaker wire, or whatever.

You'll need a small pipe wrench to hold the barrel near the rudder to get the lock nuts off and then on again.
