Best Battery Tender?

Recommended Posts

I have the NoCo Genius 2 Bank - I've had it for 2 summers now. Its pretty simple - I keep the batteries hooked up and plug it in when I want it to charge and don't worry about it over-charging. I've never come close to running out of battery on the lake with 2 deep cycle batteries. EZ as that!

I have the ProSport 20 and have been very happy with it. It is hardwired onboard and used as a charger after every outing, not just as a tender.

Same here, I even keep it on through the winter.

I have the Pro Sport 20 as well. I looked at all the reviews and was kind of on the fence because there were mixed reviews on both ends of the scale. I have had it for 4 years now on the same factory batteries going on 6 years with absolutely no problems. I plug mine in religiously after every outing and leave it plugged in in the off season. I would definitely go with the 20 again if this one ever dies!

^^^ +1 I have pics of my install but can't seem to find them. Keep it plugged in all winter while the BU's in the garage.

Good feedback thanks

I was leaning toward the NOCO, but I see the ProSport on most of the rigs at the boat shows and dealers. Maybe because it looks more substantial.

I hadn't yet seen the CTEK before...going to do a little research.

What's the benefit of going 20amp VS 8amp is it mainly for a more rapid charge?

I wouldn't think of it from a standpoint of how rapid it recharges. I would think of the charger amperage capacity as being in correct balance with a) the collective battery(s) Amp/Hour reserves, and b) how deeply those reserves are typically discharged when the boat is placed into storage. It's really a combination of these two factors....potential reserves and usage habits. One size does not fit all. More of a low amperage maintenance level is fine for when the boat is placed into storage with batteries at a full charge, like a jet ski, tractor, weekend/airport car, etc. But for highly discharged deep cycle applications you need the extra current to chemically excite the battery(s) for the purpose of conditioning and desulfation. Like boats with big stereos and prolonged play at rest with a limited recovery time before heading back to the slip or trailer. This can make a significant difference in the effective battery lifespan.

I'm fine with any of the choices mentioned above. Personally, I use four Ctek chargers of various sizes for different vehicles. I like the pulse technology and the fact that these are very smart chargers. If a mistake happens, and for any reason the battery level drops below a certain voltage threshold, some chargers can't/won't bring a battery back up. But the Ctek, even the 3 amp model, although it may take two days, will slowly & safely bring a battery bank back from nearly dead (just several volts).

seriously though, no mention of the Dual Pro. More $, but is it a necessary jump?

I have a Mastervolt Marine/boat Powercharger 12/20-3 I got off EBay cheap ($120).  It has a few cool features like a cooling fan and a sensor that attaches stick to the battery to detect if its overheating. It fit perfect on my amp board too.
