Replace pump or just impeller?

Recommended Posts

How often does the water pump need replaced? I know the impeller needs replaced at least once if not twice per year, just not sure which parts are basically bulletproof and which ones need replacing every couple years

Impeller, once a year. Some of us do it every other year.

Water pump is a completely different device. I've never replaced one on a boat. There is a weep hole on the bottom, if it leaks, the bearing is shot & the pump has to be replaced. Just like a car.

You only replace it for peace of mind. Mine last about 7 years. If I was towing the boat on a vacation I think I might check it, or bring a spare. I'll be damned if I'm going to replace it 6 years early (every year). Change it every year and you'll have the (Indmar pump)housing screws fail or vibrate loose.

I'm not sure when the last time it WAS replaced. For all I know it is the original pump that came on he boat. I wasn't sure if it was notorious for going out or notorious for being a tank and living forever.

Like Bill_AirJunky said, check the weep hole underneath the pully shaft. The other test is to remove the belt and spin the waterline by hand. If it makes any kind of grinding/bad bearing noises go ahead and replace it.

Unlike a car, because a boat doesn't use antifreeze the weep hole could fill with corosion and/or it could be dripping into the bilge without you noticing.
