Help me make a "new boat owner" Amazon Wish List

Hi All,

I sold most of my accessories with my last Malibu years ago. I am getting a "new to me" 2005 VLX right now that will be delivered soon (thanks to Mason at AWS). My situation is a second home on a lake, I already have a pontoon for long trips, the Malibu will be used mostly for towing tubes and boards with the occasional cruise and sandbar trip thrown in.

I made a wish list of "boat essentials". This doesn't include stuff for water toys (ropes, gloves, wakeboards, etc) and it doesn't include basic tools like screwdrivers and ratchets), but I am trying to make it include everything else. Hopefully we can make a list for any new boat buyers out there. If there were color choices I stuck to black. The engine parts are for a monsoon 340 in this list.

Here is my list (you can sort by priority if it helps): http://amzn.com/w/2J62C56HHPNL6

What it does include:

  1. Life Preservers (4 pack orange and a throwable)
  2. First Aid Kit
  3. Boat Hook
  4. Ropes, Fenders, and Docklines
  5. Anchors for sandbar and deepwater with rope and chain
  6. Whistle, Oar, and Ski Flag (required by some states)
  7. Flashlight
  8. Pack of Microfiber towels and basic detail kit (quick detailer, 303 Interior, Hot Sauce for water spots, and 3M vinyl stain remover)
  9. 12v Wet/Dry Vac
  10. Grease Gun for Bearing Buddies
  11. Extra T Handle and Drain Plug
  12. Replacement Prop and Puller Kit - I went with ACME 1235 since most boats can run it for a couple of days at least.
  13. Replacement Impeller
  14. Oil Change Kit (filter, oil and funnel)
  15. Extra Set of Spark plugs

Can the crew help me figure out anything I am missing?

I am also debating adding another list with recommended personal essentials (Towel, Sunscreen, Waterproof Bags, Ziplock Bags, Set of Phone Chargers, Basic Tool Set, toilet paper in ziplock bag, squirt guns, phone dashboard mount, fuses, duct tape, replacement bulbs etc)

Church Key! (bottle opener for both wine and beer)

Already ordered and delivered. (although see mention of Pontoon)... I have a beer and wine support system.

Some of the items mentioned are far from essentials. Sounds like a "anything I might need" list. This could be a very long list

This should help

http://www.themalibucrew.com/index.php?/page/articles.html/_/boat-gear-list-r12

I searched the forums but not the articles, that is a nice list! Thanks!

Having a lake place makes it easy to store some of this in the basement, but my motto on the lake place is "relax, and leave only when you have to". To that end I currently store backups for every rope and fender, backup dash switches, backup wiring and fuses, backup stereo speakers and replacement bulbs, backup bimini hardware, backup fuel lines, carb rebuild kits, and all fluids for the pontoon. Along with a full set of tools just for the lake. When something breaks, I just have to fix it, not go horsing around with marina's on a weekend. Costs less to buy online in advance too!

I even have a backup pirate flag...

While I love Amazon & the deals they offer, a lot of those items, I wouldn't buy thru Amazon. Either because the brand is inferior or the price isn't good. Keep watching TMC, most or all of this stuff will come up at some time.

Skier down flag

Dock ties

bumpers

Impeller

Never felt the need for a boat hook at all. Seems like it would be a PITA to store.

Yeah its just easy to make lists there.

I only have 1 must:

Exile Audio bumpers. Prime for tie ups.

Others:

Inflatable bumpers - take up a lot less room in the boat.

Fat sacs?? Dont for get a triangle up front.

Surf System?

Battery tender?

Two battery system? Youll need it to keep tunes going on sandbar.

Coozies? I had custom ones made for my boat.

That stuff is sweet! Love the ball fenders and that surf system too. I added them both to my list.

Now to go contribute to the forum so I get some discounts from the forum vendors :)

I See you have the same boat! What I have listed below are the things I use and have found to work quite well! This may save you hundreds of hours of searching!

**EDIT - For Archive purposes and in the hopes one day I upgrade my boat, info below is for my 2005 Malibu VLX Wakesetter with a Monsoon 340 engine.

Do us all a favor and take a ton of pictures of your boat - get a photobucket account - upload all those pictures and post them here! People will notice all sorts of stuff!

Also - get the paid membership to themalibucrew.com before you start buying stuff!!! (and use the promo codes) It pays for itself in no time!
(here http://www.themalibucrew.com/index.php?/store/category/1-subscription-packages/)

Impeller: Johnson 09-812B (on sale atm)
http://www.bakesonline.com/detail.aspx?ID=276

Cooler: AO Coolers Stow-N-Go cooler (perfectly fits inside the cooler compartment - is sweet)

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0030J017U?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00

Ballast pump replacement - if needed for ballast system due to bad pumps (because chances are yours are going to break anyway when you try to swap the motor - and those are expensive... these are not)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001O0D6KQ?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00

Oil - 15W-40 (I use this one - oil and filter change every 50 hours)

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00C43BIVG?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00

Oil Filter - (I use this one - oil and filter change every 50 hours) Wix 51069 (short version) or WIX 51061(long version - still fits) - you'll find that Wix is the same as NAPA Gold and everyone has an opinion on the forum... get the Wix/Gold :) Part # for NAPA Gold is 1069 (short) or 1061(long)
Chances are VERY GOOD that you'll find these cheaper in an auto parts store... but for Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Wix-51069-Spin--Filter-Pack/dp/B000C9UL80/ref=sr_1_1?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1454097983&sr=1-1&keywords=wix+51069

Fuel Filter (I use this one - change the fuel filter every 50 hours) Wix 33299 (I'm sure this is cheaper in an auto parts store)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000CSGTAA?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=od_aui_detailpages00

Sta-bil 360 Marine (I use this for every fill - up of gas - as do many others on the forum)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001CAW2DK?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00

Bilge pump replacement - if needed for broken bilge or to add a built-in automatic bilge pump
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B0L4ONM?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00

Polk Audio DB651 6.5" - If your speakers suck - these are very good sounding inexpensive speakers that I use - they sound great and are much less $$ than WetSounds / Exile for in-boat speakers (don't cheap out on the tower speakers though!)

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000P0PF9G?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00

Wakeboard Rope - AirHead AHWR-4 - I've gone through quite a few - this is the cheapest, best one I've had so far

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000OF926E?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00

Tube Rope - Airhead AHTR-22 - cheap tube rope that has worked great for me! (Yes - we use the Malibu to pull tubers just to piss off other members)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FE9C14?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s01

Tube - O'Brien Super Screamer - These can go on sale for under $100 sometimes - keep your eye out for them. I have 3 and they work fine for 2 people at a time.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00D0XXAYC?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s02

Allen Wrenches - now that you're a boat owner, you're a mechanic. These are big - make sure to get some!

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000NIFJQE?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00

Vinyl Cleaner - 303 Multi-surface cleaner - I just buy it by the gallon

http://www.amazon.com/303-30570-Multi-Surface-Cleaner-128/dp/B0002KKHSS/ref=pd_sim_263_3?ie=UTF8&refRID=0Q0RBEYDHVZMQWDWC1P0

Vinyl Protectant - 303 Aerospace protectant - Way more important than the cleaner - this stuff does leave the surface slippery, but is like sunscreen for your vinyl. It will definitely save your interior from the sun (barely an issue in MN / MI) if used frequently!

http://www.amazon.com/303-30320-Aerospace-Protectant-128/dp/B00L4TF32G/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1433135148&sr=8-8&keywords=303+cleaner

Boat Wax: 3M Scotchguard Marine Liquid Wax - it turns out waxing your boat is a ton of work - this stuff is easier to remove than other wax I've found.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00144A44S?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s01

Shaft packing - you may be leaking water from your shaft packing where the shaft enters the boat... replace easy with #31605 (virtually dripless 3/16) or go crazy and take the whole thing apart and put the dripless on - you want to research the forums about this first.
(direct link is not working, so here is a link to the product page, choose part 31605 http://www.skidim.com/Drive-Shaft-Seals/products/1032/)

Teak Sealer - Do you have a teak swim deck? No? Oh awesome! wait what? You do? Ohhhh well.... I love the way the teak looks because its pretty (if you take care of it 24x7) or whatever people say...
This is the Teal Sealer I used (after sanding the deck) before I found a fiberglass swim deck. You'll need to apply it 2-3 times a summer. FUN!

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000AYA9D?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00

Prop: Acme 1235 - you already said it, but its the one I use. has been great for skiing and wakeboarding

Weekend Saver Kit (prop storage / puller / replacement hardware) (USE THE TMC DISCOUNT!!)
http://www.wakemakers.com/acme-weekend-saver-traditional-kit.html

Ballast - Where do you have ballast? Mine has front (under seats) Mid (under floor) and rear left (under floor) rear right (under floor) as well as rear left (above floor) and rear right (above floor)
I used the Sumo 900 bags because of the 1" NTP fitting and it fills the whole compartment, but there are other options. Wakemakers is the best there is for help and advice in the ballast department! FYI I also used the Johnson reversible (found much cheaper on ebay and exact same) with cheaper wire / etc
bags I used for rear: http://www.wakemakers.com/launch-pad-sumo-vsurf-sac-900.html (use TMC Discount)

Four expensive items you can buy once... (unless of course you lose it lol)

Anchor: Box Anchor (look for best price) - look around for best price - you'll never need another anchor. I got the small box anchor and only go on lakes and it is definitely more than enough to hold the boat under any conditions I've seen including storms

http://slideanchor.com/store/index.php/the-box-anchor.html

Shore Spike - pounds in at the shore and holds the other side of the boat at the sand bar. This thing is awesome!
http://slideanchor.com/store/index.php/shore-spike.html

Danik Hook - when you get to the sand bar, throw the anchor off the front with a set amount of rope to the front boat eye hook... pound in the shore spike and use the Danik hook (hooked to the transom of the boat eyelet) to tighten up the ropes. Definitely worth it!

http://slideanchor.com/store/index.php/danik-hook.html

Anchor Buddy - use with the anchor to keep slack out of the rope - works very well

http://slideanchor.com/store/index.php/accessories/anchor-buddy.html

Other stuff:
Wire - if you're doing any wiring - ballast, pumps, power, whatever - get Tinned Copper Wire. If you buy it in bulk, its about 1/3 the cost from other places from Waytekwire
http://www.waytekwire.com/products/1461/Marine-Wire-Cable/

Teak Cleaner - if you're too lazy to sand your teak platform
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00004YO4Q?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00

Bluetooth Audio receiver - do some research and get a nice one - this is the best part of the boat! (I use the Wet Sounds 420 Equalizer that has two separate inputs (main and aux) and have two different BT receivers hooked up to them... one person can be playing a song while another is queuing up the next song - and I can flip the switch between the two sources. Its awesome)

Boat Cover - Evolution Covers - Cory is the man... Just don't fall in love with him.
http://evolutioncovers.com/

Battery Charger - Get a dual-battery setup going (ask us how) and get a dual-bank charger in your boat
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CBTRMZ4/ref=twister_B0185ZYJUS?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

If you have questions about Ballast specifics, you'll probably find your answer on the forum (but make sure to check WakeMakers.com for their advice and new products)
Bakesonline.com can answer just about any question you can think of and skidim.com has been great for me too.

Please God who art in heaven, dont let this turn into an oil debate thread...

Don't you dare put a POS Fram filter on that motor. Seriously. They are one of the worst filters made. TimbrSS on here used to always run them in his 94 GT Mustang he had for many years. Oil pressure was always a little low. I bought it off him, 200k miles on it. Switched to another brand (nothing special) and the oil pressure went up significantly. Their filters suck - do some research.

Get this for your grease gun: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00H7LPKKU?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage

It's expensive but you'll thank me once you have it.

Wrong prop choice. 1235 was the go to several years ago. Get a 15" prop. 1235 is common and people only get them now because they read all these old threads about how great it is.

I'd personally go NGK plugs, personal preference.

Instant detailer is pointless when you have the Hot Sauce. I'd get a better vac than that; if you are going to be sucking stuff up near 110V, just use a real shop vac. I'd also just use the Exile balls and not worry about the other ones. You also need to get some good vest for actual use. Oil you picked is way overpriced, just hit the local Auto Parts store. Shell Rotela or Mobil 5000 are always on sale.

I've used the grease you chose; it's too oily and drips out of the grease gun. This is better: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000KKLLPS?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage

Don't use that impeller, use the Globe 100J run dry instead, they are a lot more sturdy (regardless of the Amazon ratings).

I did also use the Globe 100J run dry and it did work just fine - not sure what is with that Amazon review.

Which prop is worth looking at? I was unaware of the 15" ones!

You may not need that much prop for that boat. Are you planning on listing it or adding a surf system? I say that because LBJ runs a 1235 on his listed LSV running quite a bit of weight and he is just now looking to upgrade based on his thread a little bit ago because it only sometimes hits the wall. I actually think a 1235 on your VLX would do good through the entire spectrum, surfing, boarding, cruising.

If you are adding a surf system you may need more prop.
