Amp and tower speaker matching - Help needed

Recommended Posts

theGrant

My 08 VLX came with a Roswell Aviator tower and 2 6.5" Roswell Classic R6 Tower speakers (one per side). They are wired to the factory installed RF 400.2 amp. My question is, Is this enough amp for the speakers? I have trouble hearing these speakers when the stereo is turned up even when surfing only 10' back. Is it a crappy speaker issue, or not enough amp to drive the speakers properly. I have added a link with the speaker specs.

Those are standard 6" coaxials like you would have in the coaming of your boat or the doors of your car/truck/SUV.

It is a small speaker.

It is not a horn speaker.

You have a single pair.

That speaker wants a large door or large gunnel cavity and is extremely limited in a tiny pod where most of the displacement is consumed by the speaker itself.

The existing amplifier output power is beyond the speaker power handling rating, but safe in the highpass mode.

Beyond re-tuning the amplifier a bit, if it's needed, there's no where to go with this speaker. You've reached your limit.

It's not a great quality speaker but replacing it with the best speaker available that will fit in a pair of those pods isn't going to help much....because of all the limiting factors listed above for that size and type of speaker.

You really need a larger 8" surf speaker, like a Wetsounds, Kicker, Rockford Fosgate, JL Audio, etc.

And then you might be okay with the existing power amplifier.

That amp will deliver 100W rms to each pod. IMO, thats good power a 6.5" tower speaker. So to answer your question, yes, that amp is enough wattage. Just note, a single pair of 6.5" coaxials are not going to get the job done of projecting music to a rider in tow at wake board line length.I would start by checking the speaker aim. Next, revisit the amp tuning. Once you know the setup is performing to its potential, you can then reevaluate and decide what to do next. options: A) add a 2nd pair (will still struggle to reach wake range or B) upgrade the entire setup to a larger HLCD thats going to project to wake range yet still offer good sound quality near field.

Thanks guys. You have confirmed what I thought. The speakers just plain suck for the desired purpose!
