Engine Problems! Smoke and Knocking

Recommended Posts

jasonxfield

Hi all,

Im gutted. My boat began making a deep knocking noise which then developed into loss of power, white and then black smoke from exhaust.

When at idle there is no knocking noise https://youtu.be/FxEVigRVgsE, but as soon as the boat is put in drive it creates a bad knocking noise https://youtu.be/T3AIqQR_-YQ.

Does anyone know what this could be? I am leaning towards a worn thrust bearing but would this cause the smoke problem?

Any help appreciated thanks.

Pull your plugs, I'll bet one of them will show you the problem cylinder.

Check the compression while you have the plugs out.

@jasonxfield: I would also perform a leak down test and also given the knocking sound particularly if a plug shows distress. Consider sending some of the oil in the crankcase to Blackstone Labs for analysis to see if the knock might be a rod bearing. You could also pull the filter and cut it apart for analysis. Hopefully, something much simpler and easily rectifiable.
