Swim Platform Teak Wood needs constant maintenance

Recommended Posts

I have a teak wood swim platform on my 2001 Malibu and I constantly need to be applying teak oil to keep it looking good. After about 2 uses on the water, it is looking dried out. I need to apply the oil about every 2 weeks to keep it looking good. Is this normal? The boat is kept on a boat lift, so it does not sit in the water, but only when we use it. We have a canopy cover, but the swim platform probably is not covered and is in the sun. I use a Maguiar"s teak oil product. Any ideas on what I can do to get it a longer lasting finish?

We used to have this problem on my dad's lake fishing boat (27' Sea Ray) on all the teak rails and the swim deck. We would take off every piece in the winter, and lightly sand and re-oil with teak oil. Then he saw the new guy in the slip next to us doing a once-over his rails and steps. He said he used automatic transmission fluid on it, a few times a season, and it looked great. We tried it, and never had to do the sand and redo again. YMMV, but I had the smallest hands at the time, and I really appreciated not getting stuck with sanding the slots in the swim deck that winter.

I seal mine once a year. No sanding, no constant oiling and mine also hangs out the back of my lift canopy in the sun all summer.

I've heard about the ATF, not an awesome choice for the lake, and I would guess it can get pretty slippery...
