how to drain exhaust manifolds on 409 engine

Recommended Posts

So I winterized my new boat tonight and went to drain the exhaust manifolds . Now on my old 350 monsoon I would disconnect the garden hose quick disconnect couplers on the crossover hoses and would drain a lot of water out. My new boat, 2015 with 409 had the same cross over hoses but no quick connect couplers. It had a plastic tee fiting with another connection on the bottom where the water cooled shaft seal hose would connect. I took off both hoses from this tee fitting and I got zero water out? Did my manifolds drain by themselves through the shaft seal hose? or is there another way to drain the exhaust manidols and cats?

Most of the water drains back through the shaft packing and out of the boat. You should be able to disconnect where the shaft packing hose meets the fitting with 1/4" nut driver, then you have to push the exhaust manifold hoses down into the bilge to drain them. Don't forget to re-connect and don't forget the big plug at the bottom of the v-drive :)
