Sounds a little on the high side but not the worst price I've heard. Around 5k would be the norm. What else is getting done during the install?

Sounds high, and you can buy a brand new crate marine long block at michiganmotorz for $2800. Jaspers is the walmart of engine rebuilders as far as I'm concerned.

A lot of people call re-manufactured new. You have to specify which one it is. Nothing wrong with reman from the right place but I know someone that went through 4 Jasper engines only one of which was a freeze the others had something or another wrong with them.

How many hours on the boat? I've only heard of 1 tranny overhaul, and that was a guy that did a custom job beefing it up to accomodate a lot of horsepower.

My tranny or vdrive is leaking fluid so it could have burned up too if he doesnt have to rebuild it he wont. 633 hours about to be 0

The breakdown is necessary to see. That way you know what you will save if he's not rebuilding the tranny. I would guess at least $1200 of that is tranny.

Just curious, what happened to the engine to cause the need for the rebuild?

i replaced my tranny cooler. and didnt replace the hose (it was in bad shape couldnt get it on 100% correct)that goes to the water pump. when i did this the hose clamp bent the fitting at the base of the tranny cooler... i didnt realize this. and it worked its way off eventually and then my boat overheated b/c i wasnt watching the temp in the middle of some runs.

now i have a 6300 dollar mistake

but my tranny was leaking fluid already before this happened. i'm pretty sure

Bummer. I screwed mine up due to an overheat as well a couple of years ago.

He's going with michigan motorz. theyre a jasper dealer but he said if it were him he'd put this engine in the boat.

+1 for MM. Great folks and you are getting a new marine block. I bought a 2004 boat last year with Jasper that's now only 15 months old with very little use this year and it has a bad rear main seal already. Stay away from Jasper unless you know and trust the person doing the work.

ok so its basically 5k for the motor and install then he has 383 to do my steering cable

the thing driving this up to 6800 is 1500 in fluids hardware and parts. seems high to me but he was including parts for a tranny rebuild. i asked him about that b/c that line item seems high

"1500 - Engine replacement parts “fluids, Gaskets, Hardware, transmission gaskets etc."

i mean thats half the price of the block in gaskets hardware etc.

labor looks to be great. its 16.5 hours for all of it which seems fair.

I've obviously never done my own motor swap but what could possibly be in the 1500? i feel like i could probably buy a brand new tranny for that.

Well, fluids are 5.5 quarts of oil - $40?

Oil filter - $10

Couple quarts of trans fluid - $30?

Gaskets - I thought that crate motors came with the intake and exhaust gaskets but maybe not - $50

Transmission gaskets and parts - no idea what those cost

Also have shop supplies to pay for - rags, cleaners, etc.

16.5 hours of labor seems pretty low for remove/replace motor and rebuild trans.

While replacing the engine might be worth also replacing the flexplate

Steering cable parts and labor seem reasonable.

yeah so thats just incase he has to replace the muffler or rebuild the tranny. i'm going to request that list be itemized when we settle up.
