Bilge pump questions

Recommended Posts

We were out on the lake recently for our annual summer vacation. I noticed there was some water in the bilge but it wouldn't get pumped out. I ended up just using the tsunami pump from surfing and decided to just take care of it when I got home. At the same time, I noticed the switch under the helm had flipped. I reset the switch and it still didn't pump.

So I finally get into the boat today and I'm confused about what's going on with the bilge pump (Safari 750). First off, I took it off the bottom of the boat and cleaned it up as it was dirty. I then rotated the testing knob which raises the float and it did not turn on. I was going to go ahead and order a new one at that point, but I decided to turn the batteries on and test again.

So here are the results:

Battery off, the pump does not run at all

Batteries on, the pump only works from turning the test knob directly on the pump

Batteries on and I turn the switch on the MUX, it does not cut on

My understanding is that the bilge is wired directly to the battery. If that's the case, I should be able to test it with the batteries off, correct? Also, why would the pump not turn on from the MUX? Could it possibly be that the pump is not wired directly to the batteries AND the switch went bad?

The pump worked fine before the weekend.

On mine, noting works when battery switch i off. When on, should activate if water gets deep to activate float, should run continuous when switch at helm is on.

First pull your pump and clean it, then using a meter check the voltage inder different situations with the vatteries and switch. A poor comnection or ground will cause your problems as will bildge gunk/trash gettinh in the pump. If it worked properly beforre the weekend it is mostlikely a connection or some junk in the pump.

Yeah I was able to get back in the boat last night and I figured out at least part of the problem. There was a fuse coming off the MUX for the Bilge that had blown. I replaced that and the switch worked. I was under the impression that it could turn on with the batteries selected off, but I guess not.
