Oil pan leak at drain plug

I have 2002 LSV 23- 250 hours bought used and has some signs that corrosion in the engine area - not too bad but a few of the fittings are corroded. My issue is that the drain plug has now dumped 5.5 quarts in the engine bay- any instances of the oil pan rusting and leaking or more likely the drain plug? Not a salt water boat -but the lake that this boat came from is somewhat brackish. Any ideas?

Most likely the oil pan has rusted. you will need to pull the motor to replace the oil pan.

Have you got a drain line on the pan, or just a plug? Best bet is to just feel around the bottom end. If you realm lost the whole 5.5 quarts then its either a hole or the plug fell out. If you are exaggerating then it could be oil pan gasket, rear main seal.

The pan has some rough spots on it by the oil pan. I was able to get a mirror under the engine and took the drain tube out- Unfortunately I can not get the full view of the drain area. Not main seal and not gasket.

Sorry I don't really have a cost estimate. your best bet will be to find some one that can hoist the motor for you and make the repair your self. A new oil pan and gasket will not cost much. Just make sure to add (if not already installed) the hose for draining the oil through the drain.

Need good repair shop near dallas- I am not qualified to do this repair. Too big for me.

Happened on my 99 VLX. About 1k I think to fix cause they have to lift the engine to get the pan out.

There is a gap between the fitting that attaches to drain hose to the oil pan and the pan itself. Dirt can get stuck in there, trapping moisture, causing rust.

Found this out on mine when I had my engine out. I would say it was corroded half way through on mine.

If I were to do it again, I would replace the pan with a reverse sump pan to eliminate the low oil pressure problem during acceleration.

Thank you for the insight- reverse sump pump will look in to this. It has to be the pan as I got a substitute drain plug and put a small bit of oil in the engine and it flowed right through the engine.
