Which year 23 should I buy?

Arctic Slalom

I'm selling/trading my '04 Sunscape 21.

I'd like to spend $50-60K on a non-surfgate 23. Looking hard at Minnesota Inboard inventory.

Planning to install my own gate on one of those boats.

The 23 LSV was totally rebuilt in '09, correct?

Which year did Malibu start installing their own towers? Was it 2010?

Any features I should be looking at on the 23 in this vintage?

How much ballast (realistically) do I need in the 23 to have a saucy surf wake?

We surf ALOT, and the Sunscape is not being used for it's designed purpose (cross-over). My kids have zero interest in a slalom ski.

Any thoughts on the '23 of this vintage would be greatly appreciated. I'm planning to trade this winter if I find the right boat.

Should I rule out the VLX?

On a side note, getting the grill ready for Bison to kick of the season against Montana Grizzly this afternoon! Can't wait.

I'd be asking them which of those boats are on consignment. Sales tax that you have to pay on a dealer sale makes a big difference in your final price. (assuming you live in MN)

yes, MN inboard is like 8% tax. yikes.

Should be closer to 7%, but yup it can run into some $$$$ that you need to calculate in.

Nice looking boat though and the price actually seems pretty reasonable.

Any reason you don't want surfgate? I am not trying to ignite the listed vs surfgate debate, but with a little work you could probably find a SG 23lsv for $70k. Yes, above your stated budget, but that is what we like to do here - spend other people's money!

Why yes we do,

Now on to the stated discussion please, I would like the same information. If I do get to upgrade it will most likely be an older 23.

On a side note, Thanks to all of you that keep buying new boats as this is required to have a healthy used market for the rest of us.

The last hull was 2008-13.

You should hit up Lance B Johnson for his take as he was looking for the same boat last season. I think he went with 2011 or newer which would get you the G3 tower and MTC vs MUX switches. If you look on here tho there have been a few MTC failures and all seem to be in the early MTCs and the replacement is something like $1500 plus.

If you go with an 08 or 09 (or early 10) you could get the 8.1L motor which would be a surf workhorse. Those appear to be pretty rare in the wild but they do definitely exist. 08 is the year of the ugly dash (only made one year and not as ugly as it's made out to be).

2012 is probably the best bang for the buck for a "new" boat (all newest features, 2011 MTC bugs worked out), but unlikely to be under $60k

2010: http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/boa/5178431143.html

And I wouldn't rule out a 247 if you have the space. Best surf wake, and they trade at a big discount (which I must infer makes them a little harder to sell on the backend too).

Agree with hethj7. I had a 2012 VTX, found out I really like to surf, and had to upgrade to a boat with Surfgate. I had the Wicked wake surf on my prior boat, which works, but the wave is definitely different. If you're not opposed to a little travel, there are some nice 23 LSV's out there with SG.

or if you're set on buying from MN Inboard, maybe they'll go down in price for late season......

Have to chime in on shopping around long and hard to find a boat with Surf Gate in your price range. Yesterday we were surfing behind our boat and my son decided he wanted to try to find the sweet spot on the goofy side. No problem! Push one button, ride the goofy side! He found the sweet spot and had a great time on that side. This test was of course in preparation for trying to do transfers. There is something to be said for Surf Gate.

This thread got me thinking, what is the price difference between Surf Gate and non-Surf Gate used boats?

What I was wondering was, if you aren't into surfing, maybe Surf Gate was still the best thing to come along (by driving down the prices of non-Surf Gate boats).

I love my 2011. However, in 2012, they added a key ignition back up in the event that the MTC did not work. That is my only peeve with my 2011. Also, if you pick up a later model 2012, you will have high flow ballast. Might save you a few minutes on fill/drain times. Other than that, you are in good hands with a 2011+.

I will add that if you are able to shop around and pick up a SG boat, it will do you well, purely from a resale perspective.

I don't think SG is dropping prices much on older boats. Maybe a little, but not significantly from what I can tell.

I had a 2012, and I didn't think I was into surfing either.........then I tried it.........then I needed a boat with Surf Gate.
