Water in Bilge

Recommended Posts

I had a question on why I am building up so much water in my bilge and where it could be coming from. I have a 2006 21' vride. It has always had water in the bilge and I always assumed it was from the packing nut which did have a significant leak, much more than the drip every 10 seconds. I managed to finally get the nut tightened enough on my last trip to stop that leak, but when the boat sits at the dock overnight it fills up with water to the point when I step on the boat in the morning the auto bilge pump kicks on. I've checked all the ballast fill pumps and do not see any water coming through. Any ideas?

You do realize that a shaft packing needs a drip to lubricate and cool the packing while its turning? No water will burn it and make it leak more after use.

Yes, I realize that. I shouldn't have said "stop the leak". Previously I had a steady stream of water while in gear. It is now down to a small drip every 10 seconds. I flooded my bilge while on the trailer this morning. I only got a very small amount of water coming from the prop shaft every 10-15 seconds. I don't think that is enough to fill the bilge over night but i don't see any other explanation.

Next guess would be the empty pumps. I had a bad leak in my center tank last year and traced it to a lead party of the "empty" plumbing. Do you use your ballast every trip?

Yeah I used the ballast everyday. I would fill the ballasts and as I was doing so I checked for any build up of water and didn't see any unless it was accumulating towards the bow, which I wouldn't be able to see. I would always drain the ballast after use. I'm going to try and hook my fake a lake up to the center fill pump and see if any water buillds in the bilge.

I'm sure there are a million ways for ballast to leak but in my case it was a small longitudinal split on the hose that was not visible unless you squeezed it. The only way to find the leak was to see it happen in real time.
