Boat won't start

Recommended Posts

I was on the lake yesterday with my 1997 Malibu Echelon and the engine died- appears to be fuel related. I have changed both fuel filters, and inspected the bottom of the fuel pump (no apparent clogging on the screen). It will start (sometimes) but only run for a few seconds. Does this sound like a fuel pump?

Can you hear/feel the fuel pump running? We recently ran out of gas and use jumper cables from the battery to the fuel pump terminals - that would be an easy test to hear if it runs. Also the oil pressure sensor can keep the pump from running.

Yes, I can hear the fuel pump running when the key is turned on (before the starter is engaged). The pump runs for a couple of seconds until the pressure is up. I got a fuel pressure gauge today and I have around 90 psi on the fuel rail. This is too high- I think its supposed to be more like 40-50 psi. I wonder if it is a problem with the fuel return?

Problem with the fuel pressure regulator. I think yours is located on the fuel rail, probably on the input side rail. I don't have a part # for you but if you take it in to an auto parts store they can possibly cross reference it to a Chevy truck or possibly a Z 28 Camaro. Early 90's Multi port.

Thanks, I concluded that as well. I have been able to find a new pressure control valve based on the part numbers on the unit but won't have it here until Monday so I will know for sure then.
