Alternator charge

Does anyone know what a volt meter should read at the battery for an 8.1L Indmar engine while it's running?. I'm concerned my alternator isn't putting out a proper charge?

Measured with a hand held multi meter, checked at the alternator and at the batteries themselves. Just use the gauge on the dash to confirm the reading from the multi meter.

Should be ~14v to 14.5 at or above 2000 rpm below it will drop off some but should not drop below ~13.5 at idle unless you have a very large load, like all your ballast pumps and other loads going. Mine drops to ~12.5 with all of the stock ballast pumps running and the aftermarket reversible pumps running..

Well then my alternator is shot. I can't get a reading higher than what the battery puts off when the engine isn't running and nothing electrical is on.

Thanks

Does anyone know any tricks to pulling the alternator? Looks like pull the exhaust tube and it should be pretty accessible?

The alternator only has a output when the engine is running. If you checked voltage with the engine off you will be only reading the battery voltage. (it's wired direct). Run the boat on a hose and check the output with the engine running. It should be around 12.4 not running and about 14 ish while running. If you DO have to change it, you do not have to remove an exhaust hose. The only hose you may want to move is the raw water hose coming from the impeller pump to the tranny cooler.
