Engine sounds great but Shaft isn't turning?

Recommended Posts

I hit bottom going slow. Now the engine isn't turning the shaft. When I turn the propeller, the shaft is turning. It appears to me that the shaft key in the coupler was sheared off. However, I'm new at boat maintenance so I am not sure. How do I go about repairing this? It's a 1988 Malibu Sunsetter.

Is the drive shaft still connected to the transmission? The force required to shear a keyway is substantial! How bad is the prop?

Prop has small curve on one fin. The force was probably not strong. Drive shaft is probably not connected to the transmission. How can I tell for sure? Everything looks normal other than not turning.

I can see you're new! FYI - the search feature isn't great on the site. If you go to google and type in "site:themalibucrew.com" before your search key words, it will use google to find pages/results. Example for a google search "site:themalibucrew.com replace prop" and you'll already get some pretty good previous forum threads.

But for you - at a minimum, you'll need your prop rebuilt and key replaced...

To take the prop off

Prop Puller (better than the harmonic puller imo): http://www.wakemakers.com/acme-c-clamp-prop-puller.html

Prop Key and Hardware: http://www.wakemakers.com/prop-hardware-kit.html

Or this handy kit with both items that I got: http://www.wakemakers.com/acme-weekend-saver-traditional-kit.html

Side note - If you have a paid membership to TheMalibuCrew.com you get discounts (10%) off many useful sites to purchase from.

And I noticed that you said the prop key is broken... so I'm not exactly sure how you would hold on to the driveshaft to take the nut off... would have to be held on somewhere while you use the prop puller.

I'm going to refer to other people / threads on this specific issue though, since they will have other / better advice than I gave. I would search the forums as I mentioned above - you'll find tons of info about this topic. Good luck though! I hope its only the key / prop!

Pretty sure he is saying that the prop is not spinning on the shaft like a bad key, that the shaft spins with the prop. Sounds more like what he said originally that the coupler is stripped or the shaft could be broke.

I misread that - I think you could be right.

@bouncing: You can find some good schematics of the system by googling: Marine Hardware, Elberts, or ARE double taper drive shaft

something seems strange here...Is the key to the shaft at coupler end brass? I'm thinking not? i.e., would the key by the coupler break before the brass prop key? And with only a slightly damaged prop?
